Serpentinite Antigorite-Chrysotile Rock Mineral Specimen Small

Small Serpentinite Specimen— Antigorite/ Lizardite/ Chrysotile

It’s asbestos (not a joke, asbestos is a term applied to a few (rare) varieties of fiberous minerals— and this is one of them). Asbestos in its natural form (as a rock, not a powdered rock fiber) can be handled safely with some basic precautions:
1. Don’t try to peel it apart or breathe in the dust
2. Store it for display in a container to minimize contact.

Nice hand specimen with a good massive to platy habit typical for antogorite or lizardite on one side, and some lovely fibrous habit typical of chrysotile on the other. Deep green color and greasy to silky luster— it’s a bit more green than blue, despite the pictures. Sourced near New Idria, California. Aesthetic and a good example of the type. 1.2 oz

Serpentinite is technically a rock made from the mineral serpentine, which is really a catch-all name for three different minerals— antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile. Antigorite and lizardite are massive and fine grained, or platy, while chrysotile is fibrous, making it an asbestiform mineral. Chrysotile is the most common form of asbestos. All three of these minerals share the chemical formula Mg6Si4O10(OH)8– making them hydrous magnesium silicates. They form under high-pressure, low-temperature conditions through the movement of fluids, typically at subduction zones from recycled mafic and ultramafic rocks of the ocean crust. Serpentinite is the state rock of California!

This would be a great gift for the budding geologist or scientist.
