Calcite is a carbonate mineral with the formula CaCO3, calcium carbonate. Calcite is a common mineral in sedimentary and metamorphic environments, and can form as a primary igneous mineral as well. It is extremely stable over wide temperature extremes, alters its crystal structure to form aragonite at very high pressures, and is sensitive to acids.

These specimens show excellent rhombohedral cleavage, and have an interesting surface weathering texture.
